The release of Chappell Roan’s The Giver has been teased by the artist on several occasions, since the debut performance of the song on Saturday Night Live.
The single is part of Roan’s upcoming LP, whose seven-inch vinyl edition will be released in August of this year. Although, the release date of the song on streaming platforms – and a subsequent music video if there’s any – has yet to be announced.

It’s interesting to see the promotional rollout to Chappel Roan’s new song. Seeing such hype being drummed for a song that has already been heard by many people is quite uncommon. It really does make you wonder what else would be different in the song’s release compared to Roan’s SNL performance.
We got a taste of what the single’s visuals might look like through a series of Spotify billboards posted along New York City, Los Angeles, and Nashville, which feature the artist as a lawyer in a pseudo legal service advertisement.

In said billboards, the number “620-HOT-TOGO”, which people can dial and be directed to a voice menu offering options to reach a dentist, attorney, plumber, or construction services. Hitting the options will then redirect the caller to a short snippet of the song.
Chappell Goes Back to Her Roots
Chappell Roan’s The Giver is her first foray into country music.
The record is written by Roan and produced by Dan Nigro, who worked with her in her debut LP, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, as well as the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Sky Ferreira, and Conan Gray. With their collaboration The Giver combines classic country instrumentation with the queer storytelling.
The Missouri-born singer mentioned her upbringing as the influence behind the record, describing it as both nostalgic and playful attempt on the genre.
Upon her SNL performance, critics praised Chappell for the song’s potential impact within the country music landscape. The singer has entered the growing movement of queer country music artists. Its exploration of queer themes is said to be subversive of the lyrical conventions of the genre. Moreover, Roan’s blend of retro Western aesthetics and her characteristic drag-inspired visuals have the possibility to broaden the LGBTQ+ representation in country music.
Is it ‘Giving’ Pink Pony Club a Run for Its Money?
It would be unfair to discuss the success of Chappell Roan’s The Giver just from a single performance of the song.
The playful promotional roll out of the song has drummed anticipation for the release of the song and the LP it’s included in. However, only time will tell if the record will live up to the success of its predecessor.
Chappell Roan’s debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, released in 2023, has garnered critical acclaim for her versatile exploration of different genres accompanied with her humorous and irreverent songwriting.
The song Pink Pony Club in particular has gained such cultural resonance over the years. The song follows the story of a woman from a small town in Tennessee who experienced freedom for the first time while dancing in a gay club. It evokes a sense of freedom from people’s judgement and expressing your authentic self.
Originally released in 2020, Pink Pony Club is considered a sleeper hit, gaining a cult following, and now is an anthem with thousands of people singing along to its lyrics in various music festivals and live performances.

Chappell followed up her debut album with her single Good Luck, Babe!, which is considered to be the artist’s mainstream breakthrough. The record continues to have her distinctive lyricism of queer themes through a story of a woman denying her feelings for another woman, in a -what what she defines as- big anthemic pop song.
While The Giver might be a different foray genre-wise, it still has the distinct storytelling that Chappell Roan has become known and loved for. Hearing her sing lines like “So take it like a taker, ’cause, baby, I’m a giver,” “Ain’t no country boy quitter, I get the job done” to traditional fiddle instrumentation makes for an exciting listening experience. It builds on the “new Americana” world that Chappell has built through The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, albeit in a different sound.
The pressure is on Chappell Roan’s The Giver, especially after her recent Grammy Win for Best New Artist.
But one thing is for sure, whatever Chappell Roan is about to give, we are here to take it.
