On May 30, Taylor Swift announced that she has bought back the rights to the master recordings of her first six studio albums. Original and re-recordings, album art and music videos are now owned by the pop star, the first time since signing her first record deal 20 years ago.
Since her deal expired with Big Machine Records in 2018, Swift has been open about her struggles for the rights to her albums under the label, which sold the masters to Ithaca Holdings, then-owned by manager Scooter Braun.
The seemingly silver-lining to the unfortunate circumstance is that the singer gifted her fans with re-recordings of her previous albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in 2023. Included in these re-recordings are never been heard songs, referred as “From the Vault”
To commemorate this history-making turn in the artist’s career, we are looking back at our favorites of Taylor Swift’s “From the Vault” songs. We are picking our favorite from each re-recorded studio album with some honorable mentions.
Fearless (Taylor’s Version)
“Mr. Perfectly Fine”
It has been a while since we have heard teenage heartbreak Taylor. So, when she released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) everybody got hit by a strong sense of nostalgia.
“Mr. Perfectly Fine” fits perfectly with the album’s narrative of teenage love. It’s a revenge song encased in an infectious pop-country sound, in a way that is distinctly T. Swift. We can just imagine young Taylor bouncing on stage with her guitar and big blonde curls.

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)
“Castle’s Crumbling”
“Castle’s Crumbling” feels like an extension of the more whimsical direction that she took with Speak Now with the imagery of its lyrics. At the same time, it has the haunting feel of some of her songs like “Safe and Sound”. The feature of angst queen Hayley Williams is also a welcome addition.
Out of all Taylor Swift’s unreleased songs, this song feels like a precursor to the more mellow sound she explored with later albums like Folklore and Evermore.

Red (Taylor’s Version)
“Nothing New”
Red is many people’s favorite among albums, and we’re alongside them. The record feels like a more mature turn for her as an artist.
“Nothing New” perfectly encapsulates that. It’s emotionally charged, especially knowing that you’re hearing a woman who has spent most of her young life in the spotlight singing about her uncertainties.
The line “And will you still want me when I’m nothing new?” feel so simple but heartbreaking.

1989 (Taylor’s Version)
“Now That We Don’t Talk”
1989 marks another turn in the singer’s discography by embracing a full pop sound. The atmospheric synth-pop sound also permeates a lot of “From the Vault” songs from this re-recording.
“Now That We Don’t Talk” still has the melancholic lyricism that we’ve come to love from her. But it’s interesting to hear it against a more pop track. Listening to more recent tracks, this song now sounds very distinctly Taylor.

Our Top Favorite
We can’t finish this list without mentioning -in our opinion- her magnum opus, All Too Well (10 Minute Version).
Fans lost their minds when news that the full version of All Too Well will be one of the “From the Vault” songs in Red (Taylor’s Version), accompanied with a short film starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien.
Her distinct lyrical style, which has influenced many contemporary artists, is in full force in this song. All Too Well has been a favorite of many even in the original release and the ten minute version just solidified its place.
